The Mixtape Came Back Every Monday

The difficulty was not a shortage of songs.

Launch of Spotify Discover WeeklyRead in slides

1. The discovery problem

A large music catalogue offers more tracks than a listener can explore. Spotify experimented with a recurring personalised selection to help people find unfamiliar music. A large catalogue can make choosing music harder rather than easier. The product aimed to turn that abundance into a manageable weekly selection.

The difficulty was not a shortage of songs.

2. An enormous choice can be a problem

Having access to a large music catalogue does not tell a listener what to choose next. The product addressed that ordinary difficulty by presenting a smaller recurring set of suggestions. Its usefulness depended on turning plentiful available material into something that felt manageable and personally relevant at the moment someone opened the playlist.

The catalogue was large; the next decision was small.

3. The internal idea

Spotify traces Discover Weekly’s beginnings to its annual Hack Week. An internal experiment developed into a feature for listeners. Listening behavior could supply clues about an individual's preferences. A useful recommendation still needed to feel relevant to the person receiving it.

The side project had found a much larger playlist.

4. The launch

Discover Weekly launched in July 2015. The regularly refreshed playlist offered a tailored route through music the listener might otherwise miss. A recurring playlist gave the feature a predictable rhythm. The delivery schedule was part of the experience rather than only a technical detail.

The next mixtape did not need someone to press record.

5. The listening habit

The recurring format encouraged people to return for new recommendations. Spotify later reported billions of listening hours across its first five years. Personalization meant two listeners could receive different suggestions. The same interface did not require the same list of tracks.

The weekly appointment was accumulating a very long running time.

6. The routine is part of the feature

A weekly selection gives people a reason to return without rebuilding a search from the beginning. That schedule helped turn recommendations into a recognizable listening habit. The experience joined technical ranking with presentation and timing, where the same broad system could offer different people quite different collections of tracks.

The next discovery already had an appointment.

7. The product shift

The feature became one of Spotify’s prominent personalised offerings. Its story shows a specific recommendation experiment becoming a repeated part of an app’s experience. The launch demonstrated a practical use of recommendation systems. It did not imply that a playlist could perfectly understand someone's taste.

The catalogue stayed enormous; the next choice became smaller.
