Three Products Walked Into One Phone
The reveal was not the release.
1. A January introduction
Apple introduced the iPhone at Macworld in January 2007. The company combined phone, music and Internet functions. It presented them as one handheld device. The announcement preceded the actual public sale.
The reveal was not the release.
2. A screen takes over fixed space
A physical keyboard occupies its place whether the person is typing, looking at a photograph or reading a page. The touch-based design allowed the same space to change with the task. That choice was part of the product's central proposition, where software could rearrange controls instead of asking every function to share a permanent set of buttons.
The same surface could answer a different question.
3. Touch the screen
A large multi-touch display shaped the interface. People could control functions using their fingers. Software replaced many fixed physical controls. That choice made the screen central to the design. A software control could appear for one task and disappear when the user moved to another.
The buttons could now change jobs.
4. An unusual keyboard
Typing used an on-screen QWERTY keyboard. The keyboard appeared when the software required it. The device also included email and web browsing. A phone interface was becoming a software surface.
The keyboard did not need permanent housing.
5. Not the later phone
The original model used contemporary cellular and Wi-Fi technology. Its announced features were narrower than later iPhones. The App Store belonged to a subsequent stage. Remembering the launch means preserving what existed then.
The future still needed updates.
6. The first model stays in its own year
The phone announced in January belonged to the capabilities and networks of 2007. Later features are easy to import into memory because the product family became so familiar. Keeping the original announcement separate makes its actual choices clearer: the launch introduced a direction, while many expectations associated with the name developed afterward.
The update history had not happened yet.
7. A summer product
Apple announced U.S. availability for June 2007. Customers would need the device and compatible service. The January event established a product direction. Using it would come after the stage presentation.
The next demonstration happened in people's hands.
