The Crypto Revolution Had No Real Coin

The revolutionary language was doing considerable work.

1. A new pitch

OneCoin began in 2014, promoting a supposed cryptocurrency from Bulgaria. A global sales network presented it as an opportunity to participate in a financial revolution. The branding borrowed excitement from a new technical field. That association did not establish that the advertised system worked as claimed.

The revolutionary language was doing considerable work.

2. A technical promise people could not inspect

The language of cryptocurrency gave the project a connection with a developing field many buyers found difficult to evaluate independently. That made the sales network especially important. Customers could encounter confidence, recruitment and a displayed value without obtaining proof that the promised technological system worked in the way the operation claimed.

The terminology had become part of the sales equipment.

3. The sales network

Multi-level marketing encouraged recruitment and purchases of packages. Millions of victims invested money in a product presented as a rival to genuine cryptocurrencies. Recruitment could make the scheme appear to grow successfully. Growth in purchases was not proof of the underlying asset's authenticity.

Recruiting the next buyer was built into the story.

4. The false asset

The operation misrepresented its technology and value. Prosecutors described the supposed cryptocurrency as fraudulent rather than a functioning investment matching its claims. Technical language can conceal the absence of a working product. A rising displayed value does not independently establish real market activity.

The coin’s name had supplied more substance than its promises.

5. The criminal case

Co-founder Karl Sebastian Greenwood admitted his role through a guilty plea. Proceedings documented the scheme’s large international reach. The plea connected a particular defendant to specific criminal conduct. A global scheme could generate separate cases in different jurisdictions.

The marketing network had become an evidentiary network.

6. Growth does not verify the asset

More buyers and a wider recruitment network could create an impression of momentum. They did not independently establish that the supposed cryptocurrency had the properties advertised. The prosecution focused on the deception behind that appearance, turning the same international connections used to sell the project into part of the evidence about its scale.

The growing network had not made the coin more real.

7. The sentence

In September 2023, Greenwood received a twenty-year prison sentence. The judgment addressed his conduct, without resolving every proceeding involving other people. The prison term described a consequence for Greenwood. Other participants' responsibility required their own evidence and proceedings.

The promised financial freedom had ended in a specific prison term.
