A Stolen Bitcoin Wallet Led Investigators to a Married Couple

How authorities cracked a hidden file to recover billions in stolen bitcoin

The theft, laundering investigation, recovery and documented court outcomesRead in slides

1. The Breach

The Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange suffered a major security breach in August 2016. Approximately 119,756 bitcoins were stolen from user wallets during the incident. The stolen funds were initially valued at roughly $72 million at the time of the hack. Exchange access to payments was subsequently curtailed while investigations began.

Security measures failed to prevent the massive digital asset transfer.

2. Layering Funds

Small amounts of the stolen bitcoins began moving toward dark web marketplaces in early 2017. The perpetrators utilized cryptocurrency mixers and non-compliant exchanges to obscure the transaction trails. Law enforcement focused tracking efforts on these tiered transfers over the following years. Blockchain analysis revealed gradual movement across multiple alternative platforms.

The laundering network spanned several different online illicit markets.

3. Decrypted Files

Federal authorities executed search warrants on cloud storage accounts belonging to Ilya Lichtenstein in February 2022. Agents discovered a spreadsheet containing wallet addresses and private keys linked to the 2016 breach. Recovering these passwords allowed investigators to directly access the primary wallet holding the vast majority of the funds. The seized cryptocurrency was valued at billions of dollars by that point.

Access credentials unlocked the core reserves of stolen digital currency.

4. Arrests Made

United States federal authorities arrested Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan in New York for money laundering conspiracy. Prosecutors alleged the couple conspired to launder billions of dollars through complex transactions. The defendants faced charges related to defrauding the government alongside financial conspiracy counts. Both individuals were subsequently processed through the federal court system.

The couple faced multiple federal conspiracy and money laundering charges.

5. Guilty Pleas

Both defendants entered formal guilty pleas in August 2023 before a federal district judge. Lichtenstein admitted to carrying out the original 2016 exchange hack in addition to laundering the proceeds. Morgan pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering and defraud the United States. Court filings detailed their cooperative steps with investigators following their arrests.

The defendants admitted culpability during hearings in Washington, D.C.

6. Sentencing

The United States District Court issued final sentences for the couple in November 2024. Lichtenstein received a prison sentence of 60 months for his role in the crimes. Morgan was sentenced to 18 months in prison for her involvement in the conspiracy. Both defendants also received terms of supervised release following their incarceration.

Federal judges handed down prison terms in late 2024.

7. Recovered Assets

The criminal proceedings also concerned forfeiture of assets linked to the theft and laundering. Investigators had gained access to a large part of the stolen cryptocurrency through recovered records. That seizure and the later guilty pleas were separate steps: recovering control of coins did not by itself complete the legal process for returning assets to affected parties.

Sentencing was followed by further questions about recovered assets.

8. Restitution

Lichtenstein received a five-year prison sentence in November 2024, and Morgan received eighteen months for her role in laundering the proceeds. His admission to the hack and their laundering pleas were distinct parts of the case. Authorities had recovered substantial cryptocurrency through access to seized records, while later proceedings concerned forfeiture and return of assets. Sentencing did not itself complete every distribution to affected parties.

The hack admission, laundering sentences and asset return were separate stages.
